IELTS Speaking PART-1 Question & Answer(Email & Letter)

Note: In the first part, a candidate is asked a variety of personal questions. In light of this fact, suggested answers should be modified to meet your own personal circumstances.

Email & Letter

1)    Do you write many letters or emails?

Yes, I use email nearly every day to contact my friends all over the world. But I write letters not so often, maybe once a month.

     Or

No, I don’t often write/send emails. I sometimes write official emails, like sending in a job application through email, and sometimes I write to my friends.

2)    What are the differences between emails and letters?

There are a few differences. Emails are very free, convenient, and most importantly, very fast, but emails cannot contain your emotion, and we hardly review emails later. Letters are different. They are inconvenient and need a long time to be received, but letters may convey your emotions better.

3)    What kind(s) of letter/email do you think is (are) the hardest to write?

I think emails to professors are the hardest to write because I will be afraid if I don't use the proper word or make him or her feel uncomfortable. But as for friends, we can write to each other quite freely.

4)    How do you feel when you receive a letter or email?

I will be very glad to receive a letter or email, because it means that there is someone who remembers me, and sends me something for greetings, or if they have something to discuss with me, I am also pleased to reply to them.

5)    What kinds of emails (or letters) do you receive that make you feel happy?

Whatever I receive, I will be glad. Of course, if my friends tell me some happy news about them such as weddings, or being admitted to a good university, such as Stanford, I will be really glad to share the happiness with them.

6)    Do you think people will still write letters in the future?

Yes, I think so. Because I think emails cannot take place of your emotions filled in the writing letter, and that's why you can see people still sending postcards, or writing letters to each other even they are really far away.

7)    Do you keep letters?

Yes. I kept a lot of letters from elementary school until now in my drawer. When I have free time, I will take the letters out and review them. It seems that I return to that time, so I value the letters I keep.

8)  Do you write letters to your parents often?

Not really. Now, I use the cell phone all the time because I could receive the response immediately so that I could communicate with my parents easier. If I write letters, I have to wait for a while to receive a reply, which will make me feel anxious. However, I sometimes write emails to friends that I haven't heard from for a long time.

9)   What do you write about?

Sometimes I write official emails, like sending a job application. When I write to my friends or relatives, it is informal and I ask about their health and wellbeing and tell them about what’s going on in my life.

10)  Do you think emails are useful?

Yes, I think that emails are very useful. Emails are convenient, timesaving, cost-effective, and easy to send and receive. These days, emails are a good way to communicate for both formal and informal purposes.

11)  What kinds of emails do you send and receive?

I mostly receive promotional or spam emails advertising various shopping websites or products. I sometimes receive emails from my friends who are living in another country and at times I receive official communication, e.g. emails from the bank or the Income Tax department.

12) Do you think it is a good thing that some companies send out letters/spam emails for the purpose of advertising?

I think sending spam emails for the purpose of advertising is a good marketing strategy and promotes a product or a service. However, it sometimes becomes a nuisance when it is sent repeatedly.

13) How often do you write letters?

I don’t write handwritten letters anymore. If I need to, I send an email. All official and personal letters can be sent through emails now.

14)  What do you write about?

It depends on whom I am writing. When I’m writing to my friends and relatives, it’s usually about what’s happening in my life and to ask about their wellbeing. When writing an official letter, it is for a specific purpose and it is formal.

15) On what occasions do you write letters?

I write letters very rarely and there are no specific occasions when I write them.

16) Do you like writing letters to your relatives and friends? (why/why not?)

Yes, I like writing to my relatives and friends, but I write emails or messages to them. I don’t write handwritten letters now.

17) Do you and your friend keep in touch with (handwritten) letters?

No, I don’t stay in touch with my friends through handwritten letters. I text them or chat with them or send them an email.

18) How do you keep in touch with your friends and relatives (by email, letter, by phone or by any other way)?

I stay in touch with my friends mostly through the online social media apps and websites, like Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, etc.
